The Mule Of Mud Hollow

Novel: Historical Fiction
Picture
My debut novel, The Mule Of Mud Hollow, is a story that's near and dear to my heart. I've wanted to write a middle grade book for a long time because that's when reading first came alive for me. But as a horse girl and history nerd (even then), I could never find enough books that intertwined my two passions in a satisfying way.

This book is my answer to that, and the kind of story I wish I had growing up. So here's to all the history-loving, horse girls out there! I hope you have as much fun reading it as I did writing it.

Summary

The Great Depression has plunged the tiny, isolated mountain town of Mud Hollow, Kentucky into poverty. Fourteen-year-old Mildred Nash works hard at the general store to help her family make ends meet, but her heart yearns to explore the mysterious Cumberland Mountains surrounding their home. When the town's mayor announces a plan to create a mobile library run by women on horseback, Mildred seizes the opportunity for a new job and a new adventure in the wild mountains.

Being the youngest member of the Pack Horse Library, Mildred and her faithful mule, Boone, try to prove to the other riders that they have what it takes to trek across the Cumberlands. But as Mildred knows all too well from her family's own tragic past, the mountains also have a dark side.

When the dangers they face become more perilous and people they meet more distrustful, Mildred finds her faith and character put to the test. As she and Boone navigate rocky paths and even rockier relationships, Mildred wonders if they truly do belong at the Pack Horse Library.

The Mule Of Mud Hollow brings the inspiring historical story of the horseback librarians to life for middle grade readers. Adventurous and uplifting with strong Christian themes, it's a story all ages and animal lovers can enjoy.

Bonus: historical fun facts and discussion questions can be found at the back of the book, perfect for book clubs, family reading time, homeschool groups, and classroom conversations.
